Spain: A Golfer's Paradise
By Roger

Spain is home to many of golf's great sporting tournaments - and more championship courses are on their way for 2008 for both competition and leisure.

Some good news for golfers seeking a holiday in Spain, and in particular, for travelers looking to spend time in the Segura River region: you may soon have even more greens on which to brandish your five irons.

One of the most recent hurdles that course developers had to get past was water usage; more specifically, water conservation. Since courses are notorious for vast amounts water consumption, the Confederacion Hidrografica del Segura, which is the governing body that manages water consumption in the region, naturally had concerns about the potential environmental impact on the river and surrounding areas.

According to the Minister of the Environment, it appears that some type of agreement has been reached. The Confederacion is satisfied with the efforts made by potential developers to build courses which will be adapted to the natural environment. The vast majority of the new courses in the region will recycle their own water. This will greatly reduce chances of a negative impact upon the river and the areas around it.

The result of this announcement is predicted to be a strong upward surge in the number of new courses that will be cropping up in the region. In fact, the Minister of Environment projects an increase to a factor of three in the next few years. In an area already marked on the map

for its stunning courses and options for golfing holidays, the possibilities for the tourism industry are virtually limitless.

Currently, there are 25 courses approved for construction, with an astounding 46 more in various stages of the approval process. This means a possible total of 71 world-class courses could be opening up in the next several years. As it stands presently, the city of Murcia will receive the lion's share of the fairways; where a total of eighteen courses are being developed.

So if you're hoping to book that holiday, Murcia should definitely be part of your itinerary. Other stops you may want to include: Alicante, destined to reap the benefits of four new courses and Almeria, where three courses are in the works.

Of course, you need not wait for the Segura courses; the region of Costa del Sol, which is known primarily for its abundant sunshine and dazzling beaches, already boasts more than 60 courses.

If island travel is more your style, consider the tropical paradise of Menorca. It is home to the championship-quality Son Parc course. When you pause to putt, you will breathe in the beauty of the natural surroundings, which include gently rolling hills covered by a protected wet zone, home to a variety of tropical species of birds.

If you prefer to watch rather than play, (or watch and play), the island of Tenerife will once again host the Ladies Open Championship in 2008.

And as always, the PGA Mallorca Classic makes a hot ticket for any golfer's vacation. There is simply no shortage of ways to fill your time if ranks high on your list of passions, meaning that Spain is truly a golfer's paradise.

We strive to provide only quality articles, so if there is a specific topic related to golf that you would like us to cover, please contact us at any time.

Lawrie turns back the clock

Paul Lawrie is back in the world top 50 for the first time since 2003, after he won his second Qatar Masters title yesterday. The 43-year-old Scot (above) chipped in twice in a brilliant closing 65 to beat the Australian Jason Day and Swede Peter Hanson by four.

Rock goes from selling Mars bars to taming Tiger

He doesn't own a hat, but he does have the scalp which every golf professional still craves. 'Tiger geek' McIlroy set to tee-off with his hero

The last time Rory McIlroy accompanied Tiger Woods on 18 holes in the Arabian Desert he was a 16-year-old amateur who was forced to borrow a sports photographer's camera and bib to get close to his hero. Six years on, all the lenses were destined to be trained on the Ulsterman.

Tiger lacks the concentration to win, says Faldo

It will not just be the top four players in the world Tiger Woods will be trying to conquer on his seasonal bow in Abu Dhabi this week, but also his "broken concentration". Clarke aims to put paunch in past by turning to rugby trainer

When one thinks of Darren Clarke the physique of a Courtney Lawes does not spring to mind. But as he sets out on a new campaign, the 43-year-old has employed the England rugby team's sports scientist and is obeying a similar monastic lifestyle to the lock and his Red Rose colleagues.

James Corrigan: Matt Every refuses to play bawl with hypocrites

Matt Every announced yesterday "I'm not running for President". Which is a shame. Because if he was challenging Obama, his interview on Friday would become an all-time classic which would open up a debate on the perils of being honest, the necessity for bland PR and the heinous crime of smoking spliffs.

The Hacker: This time Porky's champagne is not on ice for winter league

Now is the winter league of our discontent. Just one week gone of our 10-week competition through the dark and nasty months and already we are spoken of as prime candidates for the wooden spoon.

The Hacker: At last I have found a partner for my date with destiny

After a series of embarrassing refusals I have at last discovered someone willing to play with me in the winter league ? which is just as well because it starts this morning.

Woods pain-free and playing for fun

Tiger Woods said yesterday he has fully recovered from the leg injuries that ruined much of last season for him, and that he hopes his recent win at the Chevron World Challenge will be "the start of another great run".

The Hacker: As the hangover wears off, make sure your mind is blank

Even more powerful than the hangovers they wake up with this morning will be the feeling felt by most hackers that this is going to be the year when their golfing dreams will blossom at last.

McIlroy and Clarke awarded

Major winners Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy are both recognised in the New Year Honours List today.

Darren Clarke: Open odyssey 2011

The problem with lifelong dreams is they are invariably fulfilled in the middle of one's life and not at the end. What to do in the days, months, years and decades that follow? It is a conundrum Darren Clarke is still coming to terms with almost six months after he realised what everyone agreed was his destiny.

US amateur ace turns pro in Europe

American golf suffered a blow yesterday when one of its brightest young talents announced he is to base his professional career on the European Tour. Peter Uihlein has made what his agent claims is "a pioneering move" to focus on the global game instead of the sometimes insular world of the PGA Tour.

Westwood ensures England finish year on ultimate high

England can boast the world No 1 and the world No 2 at the end of a year in which the Cross of St George has fluttered proudly on each and every professional fairway. With Lee Westwood winning here at the Thailand Golf Championship and with Ian Poulter lifting the Australian Masters title in Perth, this was the most dramatic way to lower the curtain.

The Hacker: I may lack flair but at least the lifeboats don't come round any more

The one priority attribute hackers need to possess is the ability to laugh at ourselves. Or rather, the ability to join in quickly when everyone else is laughing at us.

Westwood's sole driver is his major motivation

While the achievements of Luke Donald, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy will rightly play a big role in this week's BBC Sports Personality of the Year, there is another Englishman who should not be forgotten. Lee Westwood was huge-odds-on to win his fourth title of the year this season and in terms of passing financial milestones he has left that trio trailing.

Boys don't cry; but men admit they cried as boys.

John Daly: 'Wild Thing' turns into father of the year

Just as John Daly has always been much more than your average golfer, so it can be revealed he is so much more than your average single parent. It may not tally with the general perception of the Wild Thing, but the truth is that when he is not storming off the course he is the full-time schoolteacher to his eight-year-old son. And he happens to be rather successful at it.

Donald tailors 2012 schedule for majors

Luke Donald arrived in Melbourne this morning with Australia's most successful golfer of recent times comparing him alongside "the greats". Geoff Ogilvy is clearly someone who doesn't believe a major is a necessity to rubber-stamp this world No 1's reputation.

Donald gets emotional as he sits on top of the world

Never has a 50-footer across the final green for an eagle and a victory been so overshadowed. Like everyone who understands the vagaries and rigours of professional golf, Alvaro Quiros would have appreciated why Luke Donald was commanding the spotlight. Here was history to hail.

And as this debate will rage so the quiet Englishman will try to apply the historic finishing touches to the season in which he rose to become the best of them all.

McIlroy set for push to pip Donald

First he will try to take care of the world's best, Luke Donald, then he will face up to the resurrected might of the world's greatest, Tiger Woods. Rory McIlroy may be suffering the after-effects of a virus, but he is even more gripped by the fever running through golf.

At last Tiger Woods holed a putt to win a title. And even though this was the Presidents Cup and the glory was not only his but also that of his team, the look in his eyes showed how much this meant to him.

The Hacker: As I venture into the Bermuda triangle, I am haunted by 007

As a rule, hackers are happy when creating havoc in private, with only their long-suffering playing partners as witnesses. Occasionally, however, they have to face a wider audience. I am today embarking on a trip which will severely test not only my golf but my nerve.

It will puzzle a lot of people why Tiger Woods decided to give his former caddie Steve Williams such an easy ride yesterday ? in public at least. After a day of intense scrutiny and conjecture, Adam Scott announced he would not be sacking his caddie Steve Williams for calling his former employer Tiger Woods "that black arsehole".

James Corrigan: Ban Williams now and be done with racism

A crass remark uttered by a jilted caddie who is that grotesque mix of the stupid and the arrogant? A malicious comment from a racist whose bitterness manifested itself in the most disgusting manner? A foolish, insensitive, naïve quip from one of golf's own which shows the underlying bigotry in the ancient game?

James Lawton: Rank stupidity to blame for caddie's attack

McDowell is back after pain in Spain

Graeme McDowell is no quitter. So it was with brutally honest fervour that he confessed here yesterday. The Ulsterman actually chucked in the towel last week. And how desperate he was to claw back that damnable piece of flannel to wipe away the fury.

Rory McIlroy: 'Yes, I have changed. It is all part of growing up'

Golfer changes agent. So what? It should be right up there with "man changes bank", or "rock star changes dealer". Except the golfer happens to be Rory McIlroy, thus it is perceived to mean an awful lot. Here yesterday, the young Ulsterman with the world at his feet and the world at his letterbox explained how this realisation has hit him since he split with Chubby Chandler two weeks ago.

Love-in for Chubby and Rory after split

The show must go on and it did so here at the HSBC WGC Champions yesterday with Rory McIlroy and Chubby Chandler seemingly as tight a double act as ever. McIlroy stays on course for his bumper payday

Rory McIlroy extended his advantage at the halfway point of the race to win the richest first prize in golf. Going into today's third round, the Ulsterman held a two-stroke lead with the $2m (£1.24m) Shanghai Masters jackpot in his sights.

McIlroy tetchy over Chandler spilt after his 64

Rory McIlroy's split from his long-term manager didn't seem to have affected his form at the Shanghai Masters yesterday as he shot an eight-under 64 to lead the first-round.
