Are You Sure The Xbox 360 Is The Right Machine For You? By John Bradford, Fri Dec 9th
Admittedly the specs of the upcoming XBOX 360 are fabulousand enticing especially to those comparing the look of games onthe older with current spec PC gaming platforms. Aside from the raw specs of a 12x dual-layer DVD-ROM drive, anIBM CPU with three symmetrical cores each running at 3.2 GHz anda high definition capable graphics system from ATI, the XBOX 360 is also muchsmaller than its predecessor. Measuring only 3.3 x 12.2 x 10.2and weighing in at 7.7 pounds, the 360 has a more livingroom friendly stature. One of the most anticipated features is that of the ATI graphicscapabilities for high definition output. For those with suitabledisplays the XBOX 360will support 720p and 1080i and importantly, the games will takethis into account also.
The DVD-ROM drive not only plays the game media but also allowsthe showing of non interlaced DVD movies. The new will savemedia and game information on separately sold detachable harddrives and flash
memory units. The hard drive will also make theXBOX 360 backwardly compatible with some of the older XBOXlibrary. XBOX 360 uses a new button layout for its controllers. The blackand white buttons of the first controllers have beenreplaced with new shoulder buttons placed above the left andright triggers. The controllers are now wireless and the XBOX360 can accept up to four of them or three via USB 2.0 ports. Without networking the XBOX 360 would be a deadduck. An Ethernet port allows connectivity to the new LiveSilver. The included service lets anyone create a Gamertag andgamer card to express your online identity, chat live with voicechat, and connect to the Live Marketplace to buyexpansions, maps, and other digital goodies for your games. Considering the specs and possibility of 20 launch titlesincluding Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham Racing 3, itseems the 360 will be a must buy. Before you do however, take a look at the Playstation 3. Or just get both of them!
